SPARK- Experiment 42
There is no enemy.
(Matrix Code SPARK042.00)
NOTES: Since your Box is originally designed to defend itself, your Box only feels normal if it has something to defend itself against. Thus, one of the most natural and persistent behaviors of the Box is to create ‘enemies’. This is how the Box assures itself, and you, that its raison d’être – its Reason for forcing you to abide by its abrupt limitations – is of the utmost importance. It is keeping you ‘safe’. However, before your Box can keep you ‘safe’, it must first fabricate an ‘enemy’ which it can keep you safe from. When your Attention is constantly reminded of all the surrounding dangers, you more easily accept living within the straitjacket of your Box’s Survival Strategy. If you look around, you will Discover this same formula at work in modern culture: if government manufactures ‘enemies’ first, then it can make trillions on weapons, armies, navies, secret ‘3 letter’ organizations, and a ‘war on terror’, while keeping its citizens huddled together, docile and suppressed.
At some point you may come to Observe this phenomenon, that the first thing you find yourself doing upon waking in the morning is counting your enemies. The clues are Noticing yourself feeling Resentment, rehearsing Justifications and Excuses, proving that you are ‘right’ and they are ‘wrong’ in well-rehearsed conversations, plotting various forms of deceit, Revenge, betrayal, etc. Once you know who your enemies are, then you know who you are.
Possibility Management reveals that you only make Stories for a Reason. If you are Story-making at all, the Story serves a Purpose. In order to find the Purpose for Is Gluing the particular Story that someone is your enemy, you must step away from being Identified with your Story so as to Believe that your Story is ‘true’. Disidentifying and seeing your Box’s ‘Enemy Story’ as just another Story can be extremely awkward. This is because the payoff from having such an indisputable and convincing Enemy Story can be so great that you cannot shift your view without throwing your Box into a Liquid State. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to at least consider this idea from author David Gerrold, “There is no enemy. We are all martyrs to evolution.”
From this (r)evolutionary perspective, every struggle that you encounter during your days and nights, whether it be inner or outer, whether you realize it or not, frames you in the service of the Bright Principle of Evolution. Therefore any conflict or struggle is strictly Evolutionary. Every Problem that you encounter is a Doorway into a specific environment designed to contain all the elements needed for you to take your next steps on the Evolutionary Path.
If you align yourself to be in agreement with your Problems, then you align yourself with the forces of Evolution. Possibilitators are trained to catalyze this shift in perspective for individuals and for organizations. If you are in the river anyway, why not swim downstream? Problems become valuable educational change agents. Any Relating with people, organizations, or circumstances that you formerly regarded as being difficult, suddenly changes into an Evolutionary Amusement Park. You now relate with allies in your personal and professional development. You start to recognize the profound benevolence of your Problems.
EXPERIMENTS:
SPARK042.01 AGREE WITH THE ENEMY AND USE THE PROBLEM AS THE SOLUTION Decide to start this Experiment right NOW. Within an hour you will encounter some form of Problem. Big or small, technical or personal, you will have a Problem. Decide already NOW that this Problem is an ally rather than an enemy. Decide NOW that the next bothersome person is actually an agent of Evolution in disguise, sent to you with your next Evolutionary assignment. Decide already NOW, beforehand, to agree with them. Just already agree. If they are saying that you are wrong, that you overlooked something, or that you made a mistake, simply agree. If they inconvenience you in some way, do not defend yourself from the irritation. Let it do its work on you. Notice that if you agree with the enemy, then you cannot distinguish yourself from the enemy. If you cannot distinguish yourself from the enemy, then there is no enemy. Do not try to explain their actions to yourself. Do not create Excuses for their inactions. Realize that because you are both striving to make things more Evolved you are both dedicated to the same goal. Just like in soccer, it means you are on the same Team. Each Team needs all the weird perspectives and unique intelligences and skills of each player. Say, “Wow. You are right! Look at that! It is a Problem!” Do not try to find a solution. First, be where the Problem is. Let yourself have the viewpoint that it really is a Problem, and let the Problematical nature of the details work on you. This will not be comfortable. Once you have the same perspective as the bringer of the problem, the next action becomes obvious. The next action will come out of agreement, not from being the lone hero, the fighter of the enemy, the bringer of solutions. The solutions you come up with this new way may be solutions you never could have created from your old Survival Strategy. These solutions will be more Evolutionary, for everyone involved. Do this Experiment more than once. Notice any patterns in the solutions that get created. Share your Discoveries with others by giving an online-or-offline WorkTalk titled something like: THE PROBLEM IS THE SOLUTION. Record your WorkTalk and post it on your Website.
SPARK042.02 COUNT YOUR ENEMIES AND GO THANK THEM In your Possibility Team, sit in a big circle with your Beep! Books. Title a fresh page: MY ENEMIES. Make a list of people who are now, or who were at one time, your ‘enemy’. After each name, write a few words about why they are your enemy. For example:
Jimmy Baumann – he put an add in the school newspaper that my bike was for sale and it was not for sale.
Kevin Keyes – my almost girlfriend Gloria Hinchcliff fell in love with him.
Purna Steinitz – he made me an offer to be his business partner under conditions that only favored himself.
Wolfgang Sechser – he inserted himself in key positions at the ecovillage to retain control over the context and block the evolution of the decision making technology. He would take walks with me, but only to try to calm me down.
Etc.
After about 15 minutes, reorganize into Teams of 3, a Possibilitator sitting across from a Client, and a Coach sitting to the side of the Possibilitator. First the Client reads their list of ‘enemies’ out loud. Both the Possibilitator and the Coach help to jog the Client’s memory to remember additional people they have classified as ‘enemies’ who they may have forgotten or blocked themselves from remembering. After 5 minutes, the Client selects one of their prominent ‘enemies’, and tells the Possibilitator who it is. The Possibilitator stands up and spins around 360 degrees to shift identity into that person (unless, of course, the enemy named is the Possibilitator themselves). Then the Client has the opportunity to Practice thanking that person for being their ‘enemy’ and creating such a learning environment for them. Both the Possibilitator and the Coach give ongoing real-time Go! Beep! Shift! Go! Feedback and Coaching to the Client. After 13 minutes, the Possibilitator stands up and spins around 360 degrees to exit their role-playing character. Then shift chairs so there is a new Client. Continue until everyone has had the chance in each role. During the next 7 days, arrange to go thank 3 of the actual people on your ‘enemies’ list for being so helpful for your evolution.
SPARK042.03 DESIGN A SOCIETY IN WHICH THERE IS NO ENEMY Bring together as many Edgeworkers as you can collect for an exceptional Possibility Team meeting. Sit in a big circle with a Spaceholder, Timekeeper, Documenter, and a flip-chart with colored Edding 800 pens. Announce that you will using Torus Meeting Technology for making decisions and doing Emotional Healing Processes (EHP), and that you will rotate the Spaceholder job every 13 minutes. Have the Timekeeper click their stopwatch NOW for the first Spaceholder. The Spaceholder poses the question: “What are the design criteria and structural elements of a culture in which there is no enemy?” The Documenter at the flip-chart writes down everything that is said. After 39 minutes, the fourth Spaceholder says, “Please shift into Nodes for the various cultural elements. Be clear and specific as you continue to create next culture. We need one Spaceholder for each Node. Please take a sheet of flip-chart paper with you so your Node can document its findings.” The fourth Spaceholder stays Spaceholder for the next 39 minutes as the Nodes deepen their Research. When the Timekeeper announces the 78 minute mark, the new Spaceholder wraps up the meeting by asking, “Okay, given everything you have discovered and created together, what are you going to do about it? What is next here for us?” Any Gameplans or strategies are again documented. What is this Experiment about? It is about rattling cages, questioning Assumptions, opening Side Doors, bringing people to life together in a Possibility Space where they can take Authority for the Thoughtware they use and the Culture they live in. Humans create culture as easily as they breathe. When someone farts, you can Choose when to breathe. When institutions suffocate you in an ecocidal culture, you can Change Your Mind and Choose to shift into a culture of your own design.
